A HUGE thank you to the PTA Hospitality Committee (Heather Norton, Lisa Nolan, Carol Edwards and Barb Nobel) and the dozens of volunteers who cooked, baked, organized and worked the 2012 Teachers Appreciation Lunch. Special appreciation to Scott and Lauren Kegler, who provided a beautiful setting for this year’s event. From all accounts, it was a beautiful celebration!!

We Need 5 More Traffic Marshalls For the 5K on Saturday!

We are 2 days away from our big 5K Run and Funwalk on Saturday (May 19th at 9 a.m.), and hope to see all of you turn out for the beautiful weather. Hopefully by now, you’ve registered to run or walk. If not, registration will be open tomorrow evening in the APR from 6 – 8 p.m.

We still need 5 volunteer traffic marshalls to monitor different street corners along the route, including Homestead/Hinchman, Kings Highway/Lansdowne, Linden/Woodland, Estaugh/Elm and Estaugh/Mt. Vernon. Perhaps one of these corners is right outside your home? It’s an easy job that lasts from 8:45 – 10:00 a.m. You can bring a folding chair and enjoy your morning coffee while making sure our runners stay on route. Please email Kristin Cordova at kacordova@verizon.net ASAP if you can help.

You Can Still Sign Up To Run Or Walk With Lizzie Haddon On May 19th!

Now that the Chicken Run and Broad Street are over, don’t retire your sneakers just yet! There’s still time to sign up for the Lizzie Haddon 5K on Saturday, May 19th at 9:00 a.m.

We hope to drum up some competition on the racetrack by adding more runners to our roster. Look for us after school this week on Wednesday and Friday at tables set up in front of the school and on the blacktop. We’ll have registration forms for you to sign up on the spot. In the meantime, you can still send in your 5K Registration Form through backpacks to the main office. Or sign up on-line at http://www.active.com/running/haddonfield-nj/elizabeth-haddon-5k-run-and-1-mile-funwalk-2012. Please remember that your participation will help us install SMART Boards in all classrooms over the summer. We hope to see you there!!

No More Teachers. No More Books. No More Dragging The Kids Around To Shop For School Supplies!

It’s May 9th, and the LAST thing you want to think about is next year’s school supply list! But why don’t you check this “to-do” off your list before the summer even starts?

EHS and Staples have teamed up to sell grade-specific school supply kits to Lizzie Haddon students for the 2012-13 school year. Each school supply kit has been assembled based on the supply lists provided by our very own teachers (K-5). The kits will be delivered directly to your child’s classroom for the first day of school.

Watch for order forms in this Thursday’s backpacks. You can purchase the kits by sending an order form into the main office (checks made payable to EHS PTA) or by ordering on-line at www.shopttkits.com (enter our School Account #15228 and follow the instructions). We will also have a table set up this Friday (May 11) after school with a sample kit for you to look at.

All orders must be submitted by Wednesday, May 23, 2012. Questions, contact Kelly Shirley at kelshirley@comcast.net.

If You’ve Been Meaning To Make It To A PTA Meeting This Year….

Now’s your chance! Our last general meeting of the year is next Wednesday, May 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lizzie Haddon Library. It will be short and sweet, and a great opportunity to hear some of our plans for 2012-13. We will be voting in our new PTA Board and (hopefully) approving next year’s program budget as well. We would love to see you there! Questions? Contact Shani at shani_nuckols@yahoo.com.

Attention 5th Grade Parents: Please Save The Date For The 5th Grade Pool Party!

On Monday, June 18th from 1:00 – 3:30 p.m., the 5th Graders are invited to the Erlton Swim Club for the annual district-wide 5th Grade Pool Party. Admission is $5/student, payable at the door. Make sure to sign the mandatory permission slip that comes home with your student. If you have any questions, please contact Katrina Rothstein at 795-8949.

An Update from the Garden Committee:

We would like to thank all of the teachers and volunteers for their amazing help so far this spring in the school garden. It looks beautiful and all the plants are growing really well! We hope you are enjoying it with your children and they have had a chance to observe the progress of their hard work. Two wonderful new benches gifted from last year’s 5th grade class were installed last week! Thanks Class of 2011! The herbs that were transferred to the center bed are really thriving now and blooming along with some flowers in the butterfly gardens. We have spotted several butterflies already. And it is almost time to harvest some vegetables. The broccoli looks just about ready! Stay posted for the date of May’s salad bar featuring the garden’s fresh produce.

One Week Left to Send In Your 5K Registration and Sponsorship Forms! Help Fund SMART Boards In All Classrooms!

Lace up your shoes for the 8th Annual Elizabeth Haddon 5K Run and 1 Mile Funwalk on Saturday May 19th, 2012!

The fund raising for this race is an important part of our PTA budget. This year’s event will help fund the initiative to place a SMART board in every classroom. SMART boards are an interactive learning system that allows teachers and students to collaborate in the classroom in math, science, and literature, and enhance students’ overall learning experience.

The cost of each SMART board is approximately $2,250, and the PTA plans on equipping one in each classroom. In addition to the SMART board initiative, the 5K Run and 1 Mile Funwalk donates to a local charity. This year’s charity is Camden’s SOAR After-School Program. SOAR’s mission is to engage Camden’s youth in positive, enriching and educational after-school recreation.

Your sponsorship will go a long way to help our students. Each of our sponsors that donate over $100 (Bronze level) will have an opportunity to have their family or business name and/or logo listed on the event t-shirt, which will be distributed to each of our registrants. We have Silver, Gold, and Platinum level sponsorships as well. To become a sponsor, please complete the 5k Sponsor Form 2012 and return it in your child’s folder by May 1, 2012.

Also, if you plan to participate, fill out the 5K Registration Form, and return it as soon as possible.

As the Elizabeth Haddon PTA is a nonprofit organization (EIN #22-33-10377), all donations are tax deductible. Any questions, please contact Nicole Conrey at (856)397-5613 or Kristin Cordova at (609) 841-6558.

Welcome back! Hopefully everyone enjoyed a restful break from schoolwork and sports, and you’re ready to jump back into an exciting last 2 months of programs and events that always help us wrap up the year in a fun way.

You Can Sign Up for the 5K at Tomorrow Night’s Open House/Art Show!

Don’t forget to stop by the school on Thursday evening (April 19th from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.) for a chance to let your child show you around his/her classroom. Student artwork will be displayed throughout the school, and each classroom will also have special projects and work for you to look at. Also, if you haven’t had a chance to sign up for the Elizabeth Haddon 5K/1 mile Funwalk (Saturday, May 19th at 9 a.m.), please bring your checkbook. We will have a table set up by the Lightwell doors in the 3rd grade hallway. For additional registration forms, please click here: 5K Registration Form. And if you’re interested in sponsoring our race (and bringing us closer to our goal of installing Smart Boards in all of our classrooms), here is more information: 5k Sponsor Form 2012.

Salad Bar Day on Friday, April 20th!

We will head into Earth Day weekend with another Salad Bar on Friday, featuring chives from our very own Garden. Don’t forget to send in lunch money! Many advance thanks to Ms. Cooper’s class for harvesting the chives from our garden tomorrow afternoon.

Also if you haven’t had a chance to swing by the Garden since returning to school, take a minute to check things out. Many seedlings–swiss chard, snap peas, peas, radishes, and onions–are poking through, and our broccoli, cauliflower and lettuce plants are growing strong. Unfortunately the squash and beans we transplanted from our grow labs before the break weren’t able to survive a couple of chilly nights, but we will be taking another stab at those a bit later in the spring. To that end, we’ll be asking our garden parents for help as we tackle the second round of planting in a couple weeks.

5K Registration and Sponsorship Sign-Ups at the Open House on April 19th.

Don’t forget your Registration and Sponsorship Forms when you attend the Elizabeth Haddon Open House/Art Show on Thursday evening, April 19th! We will have a table set up to make it easy to sign up for the 8th Annual 5K Run/1 Mile Funwalk, scheduled rain or shine on Saturday May 19 at 9 a.m. L0ok for us outside the Atrium/Lightwell doors in the 3rd grade hallway. And if you need extra forms, you can find those here (5K Registration Form and 5k Sponsor Form 2012).
Bookworm Submissions Due Monday April 16th (when we get back from break!)

We’ve been reminding you about the 2012 Bookworm deadline for a few weeks now, and for good reason. It’s coming up quickly! The deadline to submit a manuscript is Monday, April 16th (the day we return from Spring Break)! Use the forms on this website (Bookworm Template and Bookworm Submission Form) to send your child’s work to the Committee. They will format it and send it back quickly for illustration. And all books will be bound and ready to check out of the library by Friday June 1st, which is when all authors will gather for a special Bookworm assembly to celebrate their accomplishment. Questions? Contact Laurie Verderame at freeme64@verizon.net, Lauren Walsh at lwalsh@verizon.net or Diana Ellery at dellery@comcast.net.

Please Take Care of our Garden!

Mr. Ogelby sent out a notice late last week after we noticed some uprooted plants in the newly-planted School Garden. If you missed his note….here it is:

Dear Parents and Friends of Elizabeth Haddon School,

Last week, our students worked hard to install a lot of new plants in the Lizzie Haddon School Garden for the spring, and we are all eager to watch them grow! Sadly, we have become aware that some of these new things have been pulled out of the ground. It may not have been done maliciously, but nevertheless, we’d like to prevent this from happening more in the future.

Please keep an eye on the space when you are walking by or using the Avondale playground. If you see anything amiss, don’t hesitate to contact the Haddonfield Police, School’s main office at 856-429-0811, or the PTA (shani_nuckols@yahoo.com).

Also, especially while there are new things in the ground, encourage your children to be careful as they walk through the garden and play. This is a beautiful space that we can all be proud off. Please help to protect it!

Thank you.

J. Craig Ogelby

Happy Spring Break!!!!

Thank you to the Garden Committee for a wonderful Dig It Week! I don’t think they had much to do with the gorgeous weather, but Lynn Raus, Tina Gramigna, Donna Gramigna, Heather Norton, Laura Malcarney, Janine Ryan and a wonderful group of volunteer Garden Parents did organize and work with 10 classes to move soil, till, cutback and transfer plants, weed, and plant our early spring flowers and vegetables. Eighty-three salads were served at our Wednesday lunch and we are eagerly awaiting the installation of 2 garden benches and playground mulch along the Garden walkways! And this is just the beginning…friend the Lizzie Haddon Garden on Facebook and stay tuned to what’s happening in April and May!

They will format it and send it back quickly for illustration. And all books will be bound and ready to check out of the library by Friday June 1st, which is when all authors will gather for a special Bookworm assembly to celebrate their accomplishment. Questions?

PTA Meeting TONIGHT (Wednesday March 21 at 7:30 p.m.)

Please join us in the School Library for our scheduled March PTA meeting. We are pleased to host Dr. Stacey Cahn, Assistant Professor of Psychology at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, who will be speaking about Childhood Obesity. We will continue our conversation about SMART Boards (which we voted to fund last month), discussing how this initiative fits in with the District’s recently announced Technology Funding Priorities. Finally, we will hear from Superintendent Dr. Richard Perry about the District’s proposal to the Borough about the Bancroft Property. As always, we would like to hear what you think. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact Shani Nuckols at shani_nuckols@yahoo.com.

We Are Inching Closer To The Bookworm Deadline on Monday April 16th

The clock is ticking on the Bookworm submission schedule. All stories are due to the committee right after Spring Break! Avoid the last-minute rush, and submit yours now! Once your child sends in a typed manuscript (using the Bookworm Template and Bookworm Submission Form), the committee will return a formatted copy for illustration. All finished books are displayed in the library and can be checked out by students during the year. Your child’s bio and photo will appear on the Bookworm wall by the APR for all to see. And your little author will receive an invitation to a special authors-only assembly at the end of the year that celebrates their accomplishments. Any questions? Contact Laurie Verderame at freeme64@verizon.net, Lauren Walsh at lwalsh@verizon.net or Diana Ellery at dellery@comcast.net.

Register Now for the 8th Annual 5K Run/1-Mile Fun Walk to Support SMART Boards at Elizabeth Haddon

This year, your participation in the Lizzie Haddon 5K will directly support the installation of SMART Boards in our classrooms. This technology will enhance the projector systems that the PTA purchased 3 -5 years ago, and enable both teachers and students to use interactive software in day-to-day classroom lessons in all subject areas. Registration forms came home in backpacks, and additional copies are available here (5K Registration Form). You can also sponsor the run at different funding levels (see 5k Sponsor Form 2012). Your family or business name will appear on a t-shirt distributed to all participants (forever a favorite in our household!). Any questions, contact Nicole Conrey at nicoleconrey@gmail.com or Kristin Cordova at kacordova@verizon.net.

Celebration Book Club Selections Still Available!

This spring, consider making a gift of a book for our school library in honor of your Lizzie Haddon student–perhaps for a birthday or 5th grade graduation. Through the Celebrations Book Club, our School Librarian Mrs. Babcock can help your child select a favorite book (priced reasonably between $10-$20). A nameplate featuring your child’s name will go in the front of the book, which will be placed in the school’s permanent collection. For more information, read over the Celebrations Book Club flyer or contact Mrs. Babcock in the School Library.

There is no better place to be on Friday, March 16th at 7:00 p.m. than the High School Auditorium to watch the 2012 Elizabeth Haddon Talent Show. Put your dancing shoes on because we will be flashing back to the 80s with acts by our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders, as well as in a special skit by EH teachers and staff. Tickets ($4/adult; $2/student; free/children 4 and under) will be sold at the door, starting at 6:30 p.m.

For 3rd-5th grade parents, we are still in need of volunteers to provide refreshments (see the Talent Show 2012 Refreshments Sign-Up), serve as ushers and chaperones, and help with a variety of other parts of our evening. Please watch for Caroll Stoner’s updates for more detail, and contact her to help at jcstoner5@verizon.net.

Childhood Obesity, SMART Boards and Bancroft Headline our PTA Meeting, Wed., March 21 at 7:30 p.m.

Join us next Wednesday at the PTA Meeting in the School Library. We are welcoming special guest Dr. Stacey Cahn, Assistant Professor of Psychology at The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, who will lead a discussion about Childhood Obesity. Dr. Cahn has extensive clinical training experience in the treatment of eating disorders, including binge eating and anorexia nervosa. We will also be continuing our conversation about a PTA investment in SMART Boards, and Dr. Perry will present the School Board’s proposal for the Bancroft Property.

Dig It at the School Garden, Week of March 19th

Next week, we are getting the Lizzie Haddon garden ready for our spring growing season. All week long, classes will be getting their hands dirty, cleaning out beds, weeding, spreading soil and mulch, and planting early spring crops. We are also holding a Salad Bar on Wednesday, March 21. And of course, our special speaker at the PTA meeting will be addressing Childhood Obesity, which dovetails nicely with the Garden Committee’s focus on healthy food options in the cafeteria. Any questions? Contact Lynn Raus at raus.lynn@yahoo.com.

One Month To Finish Your Bookworms!

We are one month away from the Bookworm deadline, so it’s time to get writing and illustrating if your child is interested in participating in our program this year. All completed books will be housed in the library and available for check-out. Authors will be featured along the wall by the APR, and also invited to a year-end assembly to celebrate their accomplishments. To get started, please click on the Bookworm Template and Bookworm Submission Form. Questions? Contact Laurie Verderame at Freeme64@verizon.net, Lauren Walsh at lwalsh@verizon.net or Diana Ellery at dellery@comcast.net.
