Welcome back from break!! Hope you had a good week away. As we head into the holidays, there’s a lot going on at Elizabeth Haddon. Here’s a preview:
PTA Meeting TONIGHT
One last reminder about our General PTA Meeting tonight (Wednesday November 16) at 7:30 p.m. in the School Library. We are so pleased that HMHS seniors Molly McGovern and Dorian Pistilli will be joining us to lead a conversation about bullying, both in school and online. Please bring your 4th and 5th graders, if you’re able. For more information, here is the PTA Meeting Agenda.
Barnes and Noble Fundraiser: Saturday December 3
Kick-off (or wrap up!) your holiday shopping at the 2nd Annual Lizzie Haddon Bookfair and Fundraiser at Barnes & Noble (behind Wegmans) from Noon to 5 p.m. Come for the Principal’s Tea, and have your child cast a ballot in the Name-That-Drink Contest. Watch for scheduling information on teacher storytimes and a concert by Mrs. Greenspan’s strings group. There will be crafts, a scavenger hunt and a 1-night homework pass for each student who attends (grades 1-5).
How the Fundraiser works: At check-out, present the coupon that will be sent home, and a percentage of your purchase goes to the PTA. Forget your coupon? Just mention “Elizabeth Haddon School” and we will get credit–both for merchandise and also food. It costs you nothing!
We need volunteers! Can you spare an hour to help at the gift wrap table, the craft table or at the Name-That-Drink Contest? If so please contact Lisa Nolan at lnolan323@verizon.net.
Winter Social & Auction: Saturday, January 28
Please Save the Date for our Winter Social & Auction on Saturday, January 28th at Treno (233 Haddon Avenue in Westmont). We are looking forward to a great party, open to all parents! For more information, check out our Winter Social Save The Date. And watch for our invitation….
The Auction organizers are now looking for items to auction off–if you have (or know people who have) shore houses, box seats or other desirable things that people will want to bid on, please get in touch with Aimee Heslin at queenaimee@verizon.net or Kelly Tarditi at kellytarditi@verizon.net.
Box Tops and LFE Updates: Week 1 Results
We kicked things off strongly with our first week of the contest! Here is where things stand (so far!):
BOX TOPS:
1st Place: Mrs. McGroarty (226 labels)
2nd Place: Mrs. Gale (139 labels)
3rd Place: Ms. Cooper (116 labels)
LABELS FOR EDUCATION:
1st Place: Ms. Grillo (100 labels)
2nd Place: Mrs. Landry (41 labels)
3rd Place: Mrs. Miller (26 labels)
We have 3 more weeks to go, and we need your labels! Please send in your Box Tops and LFEs, and get a chance at a Pizza Party!!
Spiritwear Holiday Sales
As you write your lists for Santa, please consider adding Lizzie Haddon spiritwear! Over the past few weeks, we have debuted some new Lizzie Haddon t-shirts (in camouflage and tie-die) that are generating quite a buzz. They are really cute!! We will be setting up sales tables before and after school in the weeks leading up to the holidays. Please watch the website for more information on sales times. But of course you can always download the 2011 Spirit Wear Order Form and send in an order via backpacks. For more info, contact Cynthia Bonawitz at bonawitzcyn@netscape.net.
Many thanks to Linda Hochgertel, who has worked so hard to get our new After School Enrichment Program off the ground this year. We are more than halfway through our first session, which includes 3 classes (Mad Science, Abrakadoodle and Acting). Linda is already thinking about how to follow it up with a winter session. Please keep your eyes open for a new class schedule…coming soon!
PTA Meeting, Wednesday November 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the School Library
Our next PTA meeting will feature a special presentation: “Bullying–A Conversation with High School Seniors Molly McGovern and Dorian Pistilli.” Join us as Molly and Dorian, student leaders of the 2012 HMHS graduating class, share their perspectives on bullying at school and on-line, and offer suggestions about what we, as parents, can do.
Week 1: Boxtop and Labels for Education Contest
Our Fall contest has started, and we are in the middle of week 1. Don’t forget to be on the look out for these labels, which you can find on all sorts of your favorite grocery store purchases. (For more info on what products participate, check out the LFE Products List and the Box Top Product List). Please keep your BoxTops and LFEs separate, preferably in ziplock baggies of 50 labels each. Label each baggie with the # of labels inside, and your teacher’s name. The winning class for each contest will earn a pizza party in December!
Don’t forget about our Amazon and Target Programs.
Now that Halloween is over, some of the more ambitious (or efficient?!) of us start right in on our holiday shopping. As you plan your buying strategies, please don’t forget about Elizabeth Haddon’s partnerships with Amazon.com and Target. If you decide to purchase items on Amazon.com, please consider entering through the Amazon portal here on the ehspta.org website. For every sale made through this portal, the school will receive a percentage back as a donation from Amazon.
Likewise, if you have a Target Visa card, you can identify Elizabeth Haddon as your non-profit of choice, and Target will make a similar contribution (based on a percentage of each purchase made with your Visa) to our school. Both of these programs are easy ways to help Lizzie (at no cost to you) while you go about your regular (and holiday) business.
Calling all Library Volunteers!
The School Library is looking for parents to re-shelve books. The Librarian, Mrs. Babcock, and her assistant Mrs. Resnick, count on parents to help keep the library collection organized and accessible to students. This is a great chance to volunteer–you can come in as little or as much as you would like. Mrs. Resnick will offer volunteer training on any of the following dates: 11/15, 11/17, 11/18, 11/19, 11/30. Please contact Amy Weiner at murley2@verizon.net if you’re interested.
Celebrations Book Club
If your child has a birthday coming up, or you have another milestone to commemorate, purchasing a book for the Library in your child’s honor is a great way to recognize them. Through the Celebrations Book Club, your child is invited to select a book that will feature his or her name on the inside cover. Books cost $10-20. For more information, please check out the Celebrations Book Club flyer or contact Amy Weiner at murley2@verizon.net.
I just want to add my Thank You to the one that the Fall Fair Chairs sent out on Sunday. Saturday’s Fair was a great success–grossing more than $26,000–and the result of hundreds of hours of planning and fundraising.
Many many thanks to Colleen Carroll, Joana McDonnell and Kathy Wright for putting all the pieces together. Thank you to Amy Carthy, Jaime Grookett, Toni Mansfield and Marilyn Sparks for spearheading the Sponsorship Committee. And, of course, thank you to everyone who chaired a committee, organized a fair activity or volunteered their time that day. Congratulations!!
The Bookworm is Back!
The Bookworm has been spotted on the wall in front of the cafeteria, ready to display this year’s collection of student books! The Bookworm Program invites all students, in grades K-5, to publish their very own book. Students write and illustrate a story, and our Bookworm Committee will bind the story into a book that is kept at the Library and can be checked out like other books. The deadline is April 12, 2012, but it is never too early to start writing. (It’s a great project for Fall Break too!). For more information please check out the Bookworm Submission Form and the Bookworm Template. Questions? Contact Laurie Verderame at freeme64@verizon.net, Lauren Walsh at lwalsh@verizon.net or Diana Ellery at dellery@comcast.net.
BoxTop and LFE Contest Kicks off in 7 Days!
We are ready to start counting your Box Tops and Labels For Education, and we hope you’re ready to start sending them in.
We kick off our Fall Contest next Monday (on Halloween)!!! Please start looking for the Box Top and LFE labels on goods that you purchase, and clip away! (To see which products participate, please check the Box Top Product List and the LFE Products List). Be sure to put your clippings in zip lock baggies (keeping LFE labels/UPCs separate from Box Tops). Label each baggie with your child’s name, teacher’s name and indicate how many are in each bag. You can deposit the labels in the bins located by the main office.
Also, if you sign up at btfe.com/marketplace, you can shop through their website at 100 different on-line stores (including Target, the Gap, Old Navy and Barnes and Noble, as well as many more listed on the eBoxTop Flyer) and earn e-boxtop points for your purchases!
The winning classes earn a pizza party at the end of the contest, and the PTA redeems these labels for cash and in-kind educational supplies and technology. For more information, contact Cynthia Bonawitz at bonawitzcyn@netscape.net or Natalie Reenock at NSReenock@aol.com.
TD Bank Affinity Program
In case you missed the TD Bank table on Saturday at the Fair, I wanted to take a moment to mention Elizabeth Haddon’s new partnership with them through their Affinity Program. Similar to our Amazon and Target programs, when Elizabeth Haddon families have bank accounts at TD bank, and identify Elizabeth Haddon as their charitable organization, TD Bank will make an annual contribution to Lizzie based on average account balances. There are NO costs involved. Participation is free to
Elizabeth Haddon and member families. This will be a new way for us to ease the burden of fundraising in years to come.
Consider signing up when you next visit the bank. For more information, check out the TD Bank Affinity Program flyer, and if you have any questions about this partnership, don’t hesitate to contact me at shani_nuckols@yahoo.com.
This year, we have gotten our 61st Annual Fall Fair off to a fantastic start with the generous sponsorship of 61 companies, families and friends of Elizabeth Haddon. Please take a moment to read through this list of supporters. Remember these companies as you do business around town.
And don’t forget to come out, join us and help us at the Fair, this Saturday, October 22nd from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

FALL FAIR EDITION
The Fair is less than 2 weeks away. If you haven’t already marked your calendars for Saturday, October 22nd, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., now’s the time! Please see how you can help us make the 61st Annual Elizabeth Haddon Autumn Fair the best one yet!
Calling all Parents and Grandparents! Come Volunteer at the Elizabeth Haddon Autumn Fair.
Our Autumn Fair is coming up quickly, and we need your help! There are jobs for everyone in the family–taking guesses at the Guess Again Booth, painting faces and doing nails, monitoring the school halls (in case of rain), selling food, and so much more. If you haven’t yet sent in your volunteer form, here it is: Fall Fair Volunteer Sign-Up. Please fill it out and send it back to school in your child’s backpack. And don’t forget to pass it along to other family members and friends who might like to help.
Questions? Contact Kathy Wright at kathyandgregwright@gmail.com, Colleen Carroll at crutter73@hotmail.com or volunteer coordinator Christine Kuball at christinekuball@verizon.net. Thank you!!
Attention all Carrot Cakes (and cookies, and caramel apples, and cupcakes, and banana breads)
We need your presence at The Lizzie Haddon Fall Fair “Sweet Treats” BAKE SALE TABLE. Please see the Fall Fair Bake Sale Flyer for details on packaging and drop-off. The second page of the flyer has a list of items already promised by families (Thank you!). If you can drop off something to sell, please email Barb Nobel at banobel@netscape.net. This is a big fundraiser for the Elizabeth Haddon School PTA and we really appreciate your support!
Guess Again!
We are looking for clear containers filled with assorted goodies (candy, toys, collectibles…you name it!) for one of the Fair’s most popular booths: Guess Again!! All filled (and properly labeled) containers are due to 420 Elm Street by Wednesday October 19th. The class that contributes the most containers wins a pizza party. For more information, check out the Guess Again Flyer or contact Dawn Campiglia at dawn_campiglia@yahoo.com, Diana Ellery at dellery@comcast.net or Jen Mangelli at mangelli@comcast.net.
